Daebellum Art

This is how the mountain ranges for Daebellum was evolved, starting from a concept that I created using a gif, to some basic modelling and texturing, to using Unity's terrain editor and some animated shaders, with an animated dragon flying around. This was part of our 17 week Major Production course, which ran from the 10th of August 2020 to the 18th of November 2020.

Here is some gameplay footage of the game to demonstrate the art in action

This is the background concept for the game Daebellum, it was based on a GIF image I found and I attempted to convert it into 3D and this was the end result.

This was the blockout art for the mountain ranges. What didn't work is the level of detail was lacking and the textures weren't as decent I hoped, so I ended up scrapping this idea and went to a different way to approach the mountain ranges.

I then switched to using the Unity Terrain Editor and created this first iteration of the mountain ranges. I quite liked how this looked, however the problem with this one was the perspective, as the mountains behind looked very big and up close.

Which made me create this iteration, which looks similar but different at the same time. What didn't work with this design is that it looked too symmetrical, and I believe the foreground mountains looked a little too big, and I had no lava implemented.

That leads to this design, which was very close to the final design, however the texturing for the lava made those pieces look stuck on, but the designers were quite happy how the shapes looked in comparison to the previous iterations

And that leaves me to the "final" iteration. Which includes gradients for the lava and I also included another shape of lava on the right background mountain which flows into the lava river. There were minor assets I added in the final iteration

This is the 3D sculpted version of the mountains that I created with the Unity Terrain Editor, using basic brushes, the advantage of creating the models this way is that there could be many variations from each terrain tile.

After creating the mountain ranges I was wanting to do some sort of flying creature, I originally started with a hawk, but the designers weren't too fond about my decision, so I decided to change the design into a dragon

The dragon flying!

And this is the actual final iteration in game, which includes some more movement. There is a dragon flying around the scene, a volcano thats exploding out rocks and fire balls with lava pouring out of it, and the lava river was replaced by a lava lake.
